The Wilderness Station in Tennessee is all about giving families a chance to explore the nature and wildlife around them, whilst being able to get active and learn about what they are experiencing.
Not only is this a facility for schools to visit, but it's open to the public - and families just like yours! On your visit, you can enjoy programs that cover a wide range of subjects, but they aren't your regular programs! At the Wilderness Station, you learn through campfire programs, and interpretive hikes, and river explorations. Pretty amazing!
The programs cover topics such as "Wild Things", "Tales and Trails", and "Puppets on the Porch". They are perfect for kids, and those nature lovers in the family too.
Did you know that at the Wilderness Station there are a whopping 275 acres of back country area ready to be explored via hiking trails? In fact, there are around 5 miles of trails, which start at the Wilderness Station, and offer paved portions through the hardwood forest. These lead to a very cool River Overlook and the campground!
Keep an eye out for the wildlife along the way, including turkeys, bobcat, deer and even Barred Owls!
The TreeMendous Tree Trail is super fun too, and runs along the first 0.7 miles of the paved trail. There are twelve stations that feature along it, and each marked by a number. Just grab the Tree Trail map and learn all about the very cool plants you are seeing along the way!
Don't miss picking up the FREE educational backpacks either, as each backpack has a different theme, and includes a specific learning program on that theme. Learning made fun!

From I-24, take exit 81-A towards Shelbyville. Take a right on Veterans Parkway. Barfield Crescent Park will be on the left. Follow signs to the the Wilderness Station in the back of the park.

There is a baby changing station located in the bathrooms.
They sell ice cream, candy, snacks, soft drinks, sports drinks, coffee and water. Nature is thirsty work! They also have "green friendly" dog treats, and a community water bowl for your thirsty friend!
Bring your camera, and comfortable shoes
Their gift shop offers something for everyone from stuffed animals to spice scented hot pads. They also have children's books, bird-friendly coffee, bird seed, post cards, and discs for disc golf. Bring that pocket money!
If you are wanting to schedule a field trip, they have a wide variety of educational programs that will fit your needs! They offer programs on reptiles, owls pellets, insects, mammals, animal senses, predator and prey, and many others. Just call them to arrange!

The trail is paved, but give them a call if you have any more questions about accessibility
They have a number of free rentals to choose from, including volleyballs, horseshoes, basketballs, tether balls, and education backpacks. All you need to do is leave your license with them!
