About Sligo Abbey

Sligo Abbey has dominated the town centre since the mid-thirteenth century, and the buildings have survived centuries of turmoil. It was partially destroyed in 1414 but continues to contain a great weath of carvings, tomb sculptures and a high alter too.

Enjoy a guided tour and experience the colourful history as it's brought to life by the guides. Hear about the founder of the town constructed the building and how it has survived the historical turmoil.

On your way round, try to identify some of the nine figures carved in relief on the tomb and visit the love knot which is hidden on one of the colums in the abbey's cloisters. It's said to represent the bond between earthly and spiritual love.

Discover the abbey's link to one of Ireland's most significant literary works and it's believed that the abbey was the inspiration for the Count Dracula story!

Soak up the atmosphere of the structure and connect with the past in the remarkable holy place. There's a stillness in the air and over nine centuries of history just waiting to be discovered.
