In this guide, you’ll find the Top 9 Family Attractions, a list of fun free things to do, transportation tips to help you get around, and a great day trip just outside the city. We’ll also share some fun facts and highlight a couple of famous locals along the way.

Whether you’re exploring in summer sunshine or cozying up in the colder months, Minneapolis has year-round family appeal — and this guide will help you make the most of every moment.

Getting Around Minneapolis with Kids

Minneapolis is easy to get around, even with little ones in tow. Here are some family-friendly ways to travel:

  • Metro Transit Light Rail – The Blue and Green Lines are great for reaching major attractions like the airport and Mall of America. Kids 5 and under ride free.
  • Bus System – Clean, reliable, and stroller-friendly. Fares range from $2–$2.50.
  • Nice Ride Bike Share – A good option for teens or families biking around lakes and parks.
  • Driving – Many attractions offer free or low-cost parking, and traffic is generally manageable outside rush hour.
  • Walking & Strollers – Downtown and park areas are stroller-friendly with wide sidewalks and accessible facilities.

Minneapolis sits on the banks of the Mississippi River and is known for its beautiful lakes, creative spirit, and welcoming community. Long before it became a flour milling capital in the late 1800s, the land was home to the Dakota people. The name “Minneapolis” comes from the Dakota word “mni”(meaning water) and the Greek “polis” (meaning city).

Together with neighboring St. Paul, it forms the Twin Cities — a major hub for culture, nature, and innovation. It’s also the birthplace of music legend Prince, cartoonist Charles Schulz, and even the first open-heart surgery in the U.S. Not bad for a city with more bikes than cars in some neighborhoods!

Minneapolis makes family travel easy, affordable, and memorable — whether you’re conquering thrill rides, admiring waterfalls, or spending a lazy afternoon by a lake. With so much to do across the city and beyond, your only challenge will be deciding what to try first!

Top 9 Things To Do in Minneapolis with Kids

You’ll find it hard to believe this massive theme park is actually inside a mall — but it is! Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America is packed with color, excitement, and energy, with more than two dozen rides and attractions for all ages. Younger kids can take it easy on gentle carousels and character rides, while thrill-seekers will love testing their nerves on coasters like Shell Shock and FlyOver America. There’s also a ropes course and regular appearances by beloved Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob and the PAW Patrol gang. It’s a full-on day out — and you don’t even need to check the weather.

Just steps away from the rides, SEA LIFE gives families the chance to slow down and take a deep dive into the underwater world. Walk through the incredible 300-foot ocean tunnel where sharks, turtles, and giant rays swim right overhead — it’s like being inside a submarine! Kids can touch starfish in the rock pools, learn about sea creatures from expert talks, and marvel at glowing jellyfish in the rainforest zone. It’s not only fun, but a little bit calming too — and a great way to balance out all the high-energy fun in the rest of the mall.

Families love Como Zoo because it’s so easy. It’s free to enter (just leave a donation if you can), and you can see everything from giraffes and zebras to seals and orangutans in a relaxed, easy-going setting. Right next door is the gorgeous conservatory, with indoor gardens full of colorful plants and peaceful spots to sit and unwind. You’ll also find a lovely carousel, outdoor picnic areas, and walking paths that wind through the park. It’s a great choice if you want to keep things simple, affordable, and fun without the pressure of a huge theme park experience.

Got a curious kid who loves dinosaurs, space, or gadgets? The Science Museum of Minnesota is packed with hands-on fun that makes learning feel like play. There are real dinosaur skeletons, a giant astronaut training chair, and exhibits where kids can touch, build, launch, and test their way through the world of science. There’s also an Omnitheater with massive, wraparound documentaries that make you feel like you’re right inside the film. It’s especially great for ages 6 and up, but younger kids will still find plenty to do. Plus, it’s right on the river — great for a post-museum walk!

This one’s for families who love a little history with their fun. Built into the ruins of what was once the largest flour mill in the world, Mill City Museum tells the story of how Minneapolis became “The Mill City” — and it does it with hands-on exhibits, a giant working water lab, and a dramatic elevator ride through the building’s past. The views from the rooftop are amazing, and the whole place has a cool industrial vibe that older kids especially enjoy. There’s even a baking lab where you can learn about grain, bread, and the science of snacks!

If your family likes being outside and doing something a little different, this iconic sculpture garden is a great option. The Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture is a must-see (and a great photo op), but there are more than 40 other large, quirky, and thoughtful art pieces dotted around the open lawns and paths. There’s no entry fee, and it’s right next to the Walker Art Center if you want to add a little gallery time too. Bring a snack, let the kids run around, and enjoy some fresh air with a creative twist — it’s art that doesn’t feel stuffy.

Yes — a real waterfall in the middle of the city! Minnehaha Falls is one of Minneapolis’ most-loved green spaces, and it’s easy to see why. The 53-foot waterfall is the main event, and you can walk right up close to it, take photos, or even see it frozen in winter (which looks magical!). There are paved trails, wooded paths, a playground, and picnic areas — plus bike rentals and a seasonal seafood stand that’s popular with families. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon outdoors without having to leave the city limits. Simple, scenic, and memorable.
