About Sea Lion Caves

Have you ever explored a sea cave before? Imagine the thrill of venturing into the largest sea cave in the USA, right here in Oregon! The Sea Lion Caves offer a unique family adventure that blends the awe of natural wonders with the charm of wildlife encounters.

Nestled just 11 miles north of Florence, this incredible natural attraction is home to hundreds of sea lions. These magnificent creatures call the caves their home, but remember, they're wild animals and come and go as they please. While the Stellar sea lions frequently visit, there's no guarantee they'll be there when you visit. But don't worry—the caves themselves are a spectacular sight!

Formed around 25 million years ago, the Sea Lion Caves boast impressive dimensions. Imagine a cavern as tall as a 12-story building and as long as a football field. At sea level, the ocean's waves continually wash into the main cavern, creating a mesmerizing and powerful scene. Discovered by a local seaman in 1880, the caves opened to the public in 1932, offering a challenging yet rewarding experience for visitors.

Your journey into the caves begins with a descent of 37 steps, followed by 400 yards of uphill and downhill walking. An elevator then takes you down into the depths of the cave, with an additional 63 steps to navigate. It’s quite the adventure, but well worth it for the chance to witness nature in its rawest form.

Kids will love the thrill of exploring the caves and spotting sea lions in their natural habitat. Unlike a zoo, these animals roam free, offering a genuine glimpse into their world. So pack your sense of adventure and get ready for a truly unforgettable family outing at the Sea Lion Caves!
