About Walker Lake

Here's some history, kids. Did you know that Walker Lake is one of the last remnants of an ancient inland sea which covered much of western Nevada nearly 10,000 years ago? That's right, Nevada used to be under the ocean! Pretty amazing, huh?

Now, you can enjoy a host of fun outdoor activities, right in this incredible piece of living history!

What also makes Walker Lake really special, is that it's one of North America's great desert lakes, filled with threatened species of trout, as well as migrating waterfowl

At Walker Lake you can enjoy fishing, boating, swimming and picnicking, plus there are facilities at the park that include shade ramadas, tables and grills along a sandy beach.

If you have water skiing and personal watercraft you are more than welcome to bring them, as well as kayaks and canoes. That's the perfect way to explore the Walker River Delta, or just observing the wildlife all around you.

Walker Lake State Recreation Area is located 11 miles north of Hawthorne on U.S. 95. The park is open all year.
