About this activity

From exhibitions on the First People, to those iconic dinosaurs, and even innovations across the county, the Lake County Dunn Museum features a number of fascinating exhibits that showcase the history and culture of the area all around you.

Yes, you are literally standing on a historic goldmine!

Kids can learn all about the history of the Earth nearly 4 billion years ago, and those incredible dinosaurs that lived on the planet long before us. In fact, long before the dinosaurs you can see the Dunn Museum's OLDEST artifact - a fossil rock estimated to be 420 million years old!

Kids can learn about the dinosaurs that lived in Lake County, and get up close and personal with their very own Dryptosaurus, as well as help excavate an ice age dig site!

The learning continues with The First People exhibit, showcasing the story of Native Americans in Lake County as far back as 12,000 years ago.

Kids can explore a full scale reproduction of a wigwam, and even meet Native Americans who continue to call Lake County home.

In the decades following the Civil War, the area saw a rapid expansion of railroads and highways that brought a boom in industry, and yes, the Dunn Museum features an exhibit on that too! Kids can have a picnic in an old lotus boats, or learn about early motion pictures!

To enjoy some of that fresh Illinois air, the Dunn Museum also has a Woodland Theater where you can hear firsthand about the important work being done to preserve and restore the land.

History, nature, and of course dinosaurs! It's all happening at Lake County Dunn Museum and YOU can be part of it's history!
