The Japanese Tea Garden attracts families from all over the world, who are hoping to experience the incredible natural beauty, tranquility and harmony of an authentic Japanese-style garden right in the heart of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park!

A visit here will really transport you to Japan itself. It's a way for children to see gardens in a whole new light, with the pristine and perfect nature and balance to everything you will explore.

Today, the Japanese Tea Garden is actually one of the most popular attractions in San Francisco and when you visit, you'll see why!

Kids can immserse themselves in the Japanese garden culture, experiencing classic elements including an arched drum bridge, beautiful pagodas, impressive stone lanterns, fun stepping stone paths, and a host of native Japanese plants.

Keep an eye out for the serene koi ponds and a zen garden too!

If you want to visit the Japanese Tea Garden when the cherry blossom trees bloom throughout, make sure you're there in March and April.

The Japanese Tea Garden is located in Golden Gate Park, near the corner of Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive and Martin Luther King Drive.

The Japanese Tea Garden is served by several public transit routes including 44-O’Shaughnessy bus that stops immediately at the Tea Garden, as well as the N-Judah streetcar, 5 and 7 buses.

he free Golden Gate Park Shuttle offers access to the Japanese Tea Garden and the eastern half of Golden Gate Park with stops along JFK Drive, and at the Music Concourse steps away from the Tea Garden’s entrance

Japanese Tea Garden San Francisco FAQ’s

All visitors receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits) are offered free general admission.

The Tea House is a beautiful place to stop. Here you can enjoy a meditative cup of tea and sample popular Japanese refreshments which has been designed in a custom-designed irori or farmhouse style family table.

Free admission when entering the gardens between 9am and 10am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays!

There is a wonderful gift shop! You can pick up authentic Japanese items including tea and sake sets, glazed ceramic bowls and vases, as well as a variety of green teas, and children’s collectibles! The Gift Shop located above the Tea House on the Terrace level.
