The Gallatin History Museum was founded in 1977 and moved into two rooms in the county jail building in 1979, so before you walk in its doors you can feel the history!
The building itself was built in 1911, was already considered an historic structure before the museum moved in. Today, it offers a place where you can learn all about the history of Gallatin County and Southwest Montana too! Are you ready to step back in time?
When you walk in, you will still notice the jail cells and a hanging gallows, but around you will be modern exhibits that illustrate the unique histories of the people who called Southwest Montana home through the years.
The permanent exhibits look at the history of the American Indian tribes within the Gallatin Valley, as well as the infamous Big Horn Gun, and you can even see a model of Old Port Ellis!
Kids, what do you think people over a century ago would have worn? You can find out in the historical fashions exhibit, and even see a porcelain doll belonging to a little girl who arrived in Bozeman by wagon in 1864.
It's one thing to read history books, but it's another thing to learn about the history of a place when you are IN that place!
The musuem is located at 317 W. Main Street next to the Gallatin County Courthouse and across the street from the Willson School.
