About this activity

Who is ready to get right up close to history! At Fort Seward Interpretive Center in North Dakota, the whole family can see history right before your eyes.

Fort Seward played an important part in US history, and was actually used from 1872 to 1877. Kids, do you know why and how it was used? Well, it actually provided protection for the 500 railroad workers that were building the Northern Pacific Railroad! Pretty cool! When the construction of the railroad stalled, Fort Seward helped stabilize the region by helping the US Marshalls with law enforcement, as well as acting as a mail transfer point, and even keeping telegraph lines open!

It even protected cattle!

Now, families can visit the Fort Seward Interpretive Center where you can learn all about the fort, and the history of the area. It is also home to the LARGEST US Flag in the entire North Dakota!

You can even see what the site really used to look like in full, with a scale model of the original fort site. This was created through artifacts that were found during archaeological digs!

The center now lets you hear colorful stories from the soldiers, and events that made the fort so important. Kids - as you walk around, try and imagine the sights and sounds that you would have encountered if YOU were at the fort in the 1870s! How do you think it differs from your life today? Pretty different we imagine!

History is waiting at the Fort Seward Interpretive Center!
