The mission of the Alaska Botanical Garden is to showcase the beauty of Alaska's natural regions through education, science, and recreation using sustainable as well as organic practices. This means not only will the experience give you a wondreful day out surrounded by nature, but it will also ensure an invaluable education for kids!
There are a number of different gardens within the ABG which you can explore, each one highlighting something different and unique. Lile's Garden is a peaceful and serene garden, and you also have the Lower Perennial Garden designed to demonstrate perennials hardy to Southcentral Alaska.
The Herb Garden is a haven of botanical delights, and kids can even learn what herbs are medicinal and how nature can help the human body, and you also have the amazing Rock Garden where optimal conditions allow over 350 species of specialized alpine plants to thrive. You can spot specimens from Alaska, Scandinavia, China, and even the Himalayas!
These are just SOME of the amazing gardens, so you'll have to visit the Alaska Botanical Garden in person to discover the rest!
If you love to get out and explore, the Alaska Botanical Garden is also a wonderful place to hike on the woodland trails. They have a 1.1 mile Lowenfels Family Nature Trail which takes you on a walk through spruce and birch forest, and right down to the north fork of Campbell Creek. You can sneak a peak at the Chugach Mountain, PLUS you may even glimpse a moose or bear! Keep those eyes peeled!
With garden art, events and even programs, there is so much to be enjoyed at this Anchorage gem.
From the Seward Highway take the Tudor Road exit. Drive east (toward the Chugach Mountains) about 3.5 miles. Turn right (south) on Campbell Airstrip Rd. (the intersection has a traffic light). After the fire station, turn left into the driveway for the Benny Benson School and Alaska Botanical Garden parking lot. The Garden entrance is on the right side of the driveway.
From the Glenn Highway, take the Muldoon exit. Drive south about 6 miles where the road makes a right turn (west). Continue west to Campbell Airstrip Rd. (the intersection has a traffic light). After the fire station, turn left into the driveway for the Benny Benson School and Alaska Botanical Garden parking lot. The Garden entrance is on the right side of the driveway.
Parking is available in the lot shared with the Benny Benson School.

Keep an eye out for the various art pieces in the garden! There are some really special ones - can you spot them all?
With at least two weeks notice they can schedule a guided tour, so why not take the students for a really fun field trip!
The Garden is here to help you with all your field trip needs, whether you need us to come to you, or you wish to get away from the classroom and come to us! Programs offered year-round, Monday-Friday. All programs in the Garden take place outside along our 1/2 mile paved loop.
Programs in the Garden are $10/student , or they can send programs to the classroom at $70 per class!
Service animals are allowed within the Garden
