About Blackhall Rocks on Durham Coast

The Blackhall Rocks on Durham Coast is a fantasic place to see what is hiding in the rock pools when the tide is out. It's great for the whole family, especially those who love wildlife! 

At low tides, you can see anemones and the views are spectacular too throughout the seasons! In the Summer the cliffs are filled with wildflowers and grasslands, birds and more so whatever season you visit, you'll find a unique landscape! You'll see birds such as skylarks, kestrels and lots of sea birds too. 

The beach itself is sand and shingle mix and there's a great cycle network and a 20km coastal footpath for you to explore too! 

There are mixed terrains with an easy access pathway along the cliff top, but there are some steep steps too. 

The area is important for wildlife and geology and there are caves in the southern section of cliffs too. The site attracts around 15 species of butterflys and plenty of insects too! 

It's a great opportunity for the whole family to get outside and explore nature and wildlife - why not bring a picnic too!
