The ocean isn't just amazing to explore for all the creatures that live in it. The ocean also has a fascinating past of shipwrecks, rescues, and those who bring ships into port safely....and the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum is the perfect museum to learn all about it!
Queenscliffe Maritime Museum is filled with exhibits which capture the nautical history of the area. What started out being created to preserve the story of a lifeboat, grew into a museum of much, much more!
The main exhibits cover a range of topics, including those historic lighthouses, lifeboats, Port Phillip Sea Pilots and Steamer trade and the Boat Building Shed.
Other smaller exhibits showcase a range of artefacts that the whole family can learn from. There is a cool dive display, a selection of lifesaving equipment, model ships with an incredible attention to detail, and fascinating exhibits on a shipwrecks in the area - including artefacts from it!
This shipwreck was the SS Time, which was stranded on Corsair Rock all the way back in 1949. Items that were salvaged were sugar, hides and timber. Can you imagine pulling all of them out of the water!?
Kids also love the hands-on activities at the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum. These include being able to sound a portable fog horn, they can try their hand at a morse key, and ring a ships bell!
If that wasn't enough, they can also have a play on Benito's Pirate Boat, or enjoy time on Defiance Too - a red wooden boat found in the museum grounds.
Maritime fun at this Queencliff museum! Ships ahoy!
