There is a huge Anzac history from Albany, so why not take the kids to learn all about it at the National Anzac Centre. The centre is dedicated entirely to honouring those Anzacs that fought in the First World War. The centre is within Albany Heritage Park, and offers the family a way to learn all about those real people who sacrificed their lives to defend the country.
It was back in 1914 that over 41,000 Australians and New Zealanders left the shorts of Albany, and this is their story.
Inside the National Anzac Centre, you will find a number of fascinating exhibits which will offer those connections with the real people behind the battle. The exhibits feature interactive multimedia displays, as well as rare images, rare film, and unique artefacts. There is even audio commentary on some exhibits.
Throughout the centre, there are key phases and events listed that occurred during the First World War, which are told through the stories of the Anzacs themselves.
There are even interactive experiences where you can assume the identity of an Anzac related character - and there are 32 to choose from. The very cool part is that is was technology developed by the Western Australian Museum and the Australian War Memorial themselves!
You can follow their personal experience during the war, from recruitment, right through training, to life on board the ship, and of course the conflicts.
A great day out to teach kids about the Great War, and how important those people were who fought in it. History comes to life in Albany.
