If you love history, particularly Australian history, then Lanyon Homestead just might surprise you. It's a fascinating look into a typical 1850's homestead - the type of museum you might not think about when you think about the popular attractions of Australian history within the country. But it's a fascinating insight into rural Australian life from over a century ago.
Set at the foot of the Brindabella Ranges, Lanyon Homestead is one of Australia's premiere historic properties, and has been beautifully restored and furnished.
Kids, we all know the best thing about history is imagining the past come to life! Why don't you wander around this homestead and imagine yourself living there? What smells would there be? What sounds? How might you have entertained yourself? (Remember, it's the 1850's - there's no Facebook or XBox!)
Wander through the bedrooms, and the grounds...the homestead is set on beautiful pleasure gardens which include a range of outbuildings. There are even still sheep, cattle and horses that still love to graze on the timbered hills and banks of the Murrumbidgee River!
The homestead have a number of permanent exhibitions on which will really help completely immerse you in the Lanyon Homestead history. The Within Living Memory exhibition focuses on the memories of the people who lived and worked there. A fascinating insight.
The Cunningham Family Album are a collection of personal photographs of everyone who lived and worked at Lanyon between 1849 and 1926. How does it compare to your life now? They certainly didn't have Instagram to share these with everyone!
The Convict Years is another exhibition which delves 170 years into the past when property owners assigned convicts to work here.
All of the exhibitions are included in the admission fee, and will really bring to life the world of Lanyon. Perhaps one day your house will be a museum! Imagine that!
