Who is ready for some history! We certainly are, and at the Coal Mines Historic Site, there is plenty of history to go around! The Coal Mines Historic Site is located on the stunning Tasman Peninsula, near Saltwater River. Here's a fun fact to get started - did you know that these were actually the FIRST operational mine in Tasmania? It's try!
They were developed for two reasons - to limit the colony's dependence on coal, which was very costly, and also to publish the "world class" of convicts that came from Port Arthur. The mine worked for over 40 years!
Now, you get to explore these uncrowded ruins, and enjoy some pretty incredible views across the water!
It really gives you a different perspective on the state's convict history. You can explore on foot, which is great for those kids with that bit too much energy, and there are a number of paths and tracks that you can take to really see most of this extensive site.
Make sure you stop at the signs along the way, which have information on what you are seeing. What better way to actually learn about history, than to be standing right on the spot that it happened!
History is amazing to learn, and kids will not only get to experience an important part of Australian history, but they can have a great day in the outdoors too.
A great family day out in Tasmania.
