A fascinating history in Albany is waiting with this historic gaol built all the way back in 1852! Don't worry kids, when you visit, you get to leave...unlike the many men and women who spent time there all those years ago.
The Albany Convict Gaol was used from the mid-1800s to the 1930s, until the Great Depression. Since then, it has been fully restored, and now families just like you can visit, and take a tour of the men's cell blocks, the warder's quarters, and even the women's cells.
You can also look at the Great Hall too!
During this time, the prison was used as a colonial prison, which meant it was convicts that called it home. Did you know that the Albany Convict Gaol was also once a convict hiring depot? In fact, it was in WA that the convict system was based on rehabilitation - which was a different approach from NSW and Tasmania.
The convicts arrived from England over 18 years, and were hired by the free settlers.
Inside, kids can learn all about these fascinating facts, just like the some of the notorious criminals that lived there!
You can see the Albany Convict Gaol via self-guided tours, unless you prefer to arrange a guided tour. There are also night tours available if you are feeling a little brave!
So why not close the history books, and learn all about this fascinating attraction in Albany in person. Kids - when you walk around the cells, remember why you should be good to your parents!
