Marengo Park Cave
About Marengo Park Cave
Who said that family adventure needs to be ABOVE ground! At Marengo Park Cave, a US National Natural Landmark, the adventure begins when you go below the surface of the earth - and it's pretty special!
The cave was discovered all the way back in 1883, when two children overheard kids in the school yard making plans to go and check out a sinkhole nearby, and decided to beat them to it!
They grabbed candles, found the sinkhole, and climbed right to the bottom. There, they heard water falling, and then discovered something amazing right in front of their eyes! Now - you can see the very same thing these two children saw over a century ago - the incredible works of nature!
There are a number of ways you can explore Marengo Cave. There are two walking tours if you want to take it a little more gently. The Crystal Palace tour is a lovely 40 minutes that takes you through formation-filled rooms, and the Dripstone Trail is an hour long, taking you one mile through the caverns, passing some amazing formations from the soda straws to the stalagmites!
If you want something a little more challenging, you can take on some cave exploring! They provide the gear, and then you get your hands and knees dirty as you make your way through the raw, natural caves that will show you areas not seen by many!
The adventure doesn't have to stop when you leave Marengo Cave. Above ground, you can enjoy canoeing, or kids can take on "The Crawl" - a maze that will take you on twists and turns - great fun for kids!
Kids can even enjoy some gemstone mining, where they can pan for treasure as they sift through dirt and rock. And whatever they find - they keep! A true treasure!
So why not explore some pretty incredible natural wonders in Indiana, and head on down into Marengo Cave for an incredible experience!
