Let's all fly a kite, up to the highest heights - well, at least we can LEARN about kites if we don't have one to fly, because we're off to the World Kite Museum and Hall of Fame!
The World Kite Museum & Hall of Fame is the only American museum that is dedicated exclusively to the history of kites, kite-makers and famous kite fliers. Who knew there was so much to learn about these summer favorites?
Did you know that if you wanted to fly a kite before 1915, you either had to make it yourself, or get someone else to make it for you? There was no-where to buy them, and one of the exhibits within the museum tells that story.
You can read all about one of the first kite manufacturers and how they started assembly line kites back in 1927, and discover how the industry functioned and survived all the way until 1989.
Also within the exhibit are Dime Store and variety store kites, and displays showing the shift from paper to plastic kites!
Did you know that Dime Store Kites were popular in the 1920s to the 1960s, an were often decorated with some favorites like Jolly Roger and cowboys (ask your parents or grandparents, kids, they might have had one!)
Kids can even see a collection of postage stamps from all around the world that celebrate this popular pastime!
There are kites of WWII, and how the military dealt with communication before the internet, and you can see examples of aerial kite photography too!
A fascinating trip down memory lane for some, and a glimpse into an unknown past for others, but with a subject matter we can all relate to - KITES!
