Viles Arboretum is an amazing place to visit if you are a family full of green thumbs!
The mission of the Viles Arboretum is to promote the appreciation and knowledge of Maine's trees and other flora, by giving visitors a place of education and recreation. And they have done just that!
In the 1800s, the area was owned by a number of neighbouring farms. These days, the 224 acres of land is filled with gardens, trails and flora, but you might stumble across a few historical elements too!
There is a granite quarry just past the Rock Garden which was one of the areas used to cut granite from the earth, and for over a century the hospital farm once provided crops and livestock, as well as exercise for the patients!
Now, families just like yours can have some of the best natural history observing in Maine. They have the second longest wetlands boardwalk in the entire state, which is perfect for birdwatching and taking photos.
Viles Arboretum have forest habitat, fields, adventure, and many a trail where you can find a great selection of tree species.
Each of the gardens in the arboretum have their own unique features, from the Hosta Garden which is the larges public Hosta Garden in Maine, to the DAR garden which is filled with plants that were associated with Maine homesteads during the Colonial period / Revolutionary War.
So if you want a fascinating, historic and peaceful family day out in nature, then Viles Arboretum might just be for you!
