Vicksburg National Miliary Park has been known as "the nail head that holds the South's two halves together". It played a significant role in the turning point of the war, and it's an amazing experience for the family for your family day out!
This important city and site on the Mississippi River was in the sights of two presidents - Davis and that man known as Lincoln. They both knew they needed to hold the city for their control to survive. Kids will be surrounded by living history, and spend the day hearing and learning about stories from the war. An eye-opening experience!
The Visitor Center is the best place to start your experience. There you will find general information, as well as historical information. You can watch the orientation film to gain a better understanding of what happened, as well as exhibits on various topics from the Civil War period.
There are a number of areas at the Vicksburg National Military Park that you can visit. The USS Cairo Museum and Gunboat is where you can learn all about the naval operations of the war, with a number of fascinating artifacts on display. There is a time capsule aboard an ironclad gunboat, as well as personal possessions from the sailors.
The park also has 1,330 monuments and markers, as well as a 16 mile tour road where you can explore a whole range of sites, with 15 tour stops, including a cemetery and railroad.
History is alive and remembered at the Vicksburg National Miliary Park.
