Here's a quick quiz: What is Nevada's oldest and LARGEST state park? Give up? Well, if you guessed the Valley of Fire State Park - you'd be right!
The Valley of Fire State Park is only 6 miles from Lake Mead, and just 55 miles NE of Las Vegas. It was dedicated in 1935, and the name comes from those incredible red sandstone formations that you can see all around you. They are pretty incredible!
The state park is also filled with history, with 3,000 year old Indian petroglyphs still existing, and areas of petrified wood waiting to be explored!
Valley of Fire State Park is also a great place for families to just get out and enjoy a unique and incredible part of the country. Camping, hiking and picnicking are all popular activities.
The area is filled with some pretty amazing wildlife that you might be able to spot if you have those keen eyes on you! There are lizards, foxes, skunks, jackrabbits, and coyotes, and a huge range of species of birds.
If you are REALLY lucky, you might spot the illusive desert tortoise! This is very rare and protected, and if you are lucky enough to come across this, make sure you just admire from afar!
A great place to start on your journey is the visitor center. It's the perfect place where you can learn all about the ecology, geology, and history of the park. It's also the perfect place to plan your adventure, and the trails you might cover. There are staff on hand to answer any questions you might have also.
The Valley of Fire State Park is an amazing adventure, with scenery unlike any other. Introduce your kids to an adventure filled wilderness!
