You've heard the term "Only In America" - well, the UCM Museum, otherwise known as the Abita Mystery House, is certainly an Only In American attraction!
It's a super fascinating and quirky roadside attraction near New Orleans which has thousands of objects that have been found - all in a folk art environment. There are even weird and wonderful homemade inventions!
The UCM all started by one man who just started finding, and collecting, items. The true meaning of "One mans trash is another mans treasure"! The Exhibit Hall is one of the main exhibits, filled with paint-by-number paintings which hang over a mini River Road scene, which even have a general store and BBQ joint! And yes, there form part of a miniature Southern town where you can activate animated "displays" with push buttons. Pretty amazing!
During your time at the UCM Museum those musical kids might even want to try and crank the reed organ, or play on the double keyboard. It still sounds pretty good even after all those years!
Did you ever think someone could make a museum out of a comb collection? Or postcards? You better believe they can! What's interesting about these collections is that whilst the objects may be simple, everyday objects, each one has a story. It makes kids think about the people and life experiences that are ingrained in the objects. Who used these combs? Who sent the postcards?
Kids might even love exploring the marble machine made out of thousands of popsicle sticks, pinball machine parts and hot glue. (This is where we say kids, don't try this at home!)
Don't forget to say hello to Buford, the bassigator, who even has his own 26 foot shed. He meets a lot of people so he's super friendly! You can't say hello to Buford and not Darrell, the dogigator. Don't worry - they don't bite!
The UCM Museum - there’s only one!
