If you love history then you will love visiting Georgia's oldest AND tallest lighthouse at the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum!
The Tybee Island Light Station and Museum is actually a complete light station that has a history dating all the way back to 1736 (now THAT is a history!) The actual tower stands at an impressive 145 feet tall, and also has three Light Keeper's Cottages nearby so you can really start to feel a sense of who might have lived and worked at the light station.
Don't miss checking out the small 1812 Summer Kitchen as there are archaeological finds!
Head across the street and you'll discover the 1899 Military Battery that is home to the Tybee Island Museum. Here, you can explore fascinating exhibits that will tell you all about the time of the Euchee tribe, as well as the history of Fort Screven. Kids can learn about the Golden Era of Tybee Island too, and so much more!
Make sure you also check out the yellow raised cottage that stands adjacent to the property as here you can see examples of 1900s Tybee architecture.
Tybee Island is a wonderful place to visit and also has such a rich and fascinating history, it's worth taking the time to really delve deep into that history. It's a great learning experience for kids!
Just make sure you take that camera!
