It's all about art, and it's all about America at the National Museum of American Illustration. What started in 1998 as a place to celebrate the "Golden Age" of American Illustration art, has grown to now celebrate American illustration from all talents, periods and styles.
The American Imagist Collection within the museum features masterpieces of illustrative art, and impressively is the largest such collection in the world! How cool!
They have the largest collection of artworks by Maxfield Parrish, and the second largest collection of Norman Rockwell.
The collection exhibit around 125 to 250 works at a time in Vernon Court, which is impressive enough in itself, being a turn of the century mansion!
Illustrators combine personal expression with pictorial representation in order to convey ideas, and those creative kids in the family might just be inspired to use art to express themselves too!
Also at the National Museum of American Illustration are a number of changing exhibitions, meaning when you go back to see those favorites, you can see completely new pieces of art too!
The exhibitions always vary - one exhibit might be art during WWI, or another might focus on a specific artist during the "Golden Age" - it's exciting to keep checking what comes up!
Suitable for children over 5 years (those under 5 are not permitted in the museum), the National Museum of American Illustration is a colorful, artistic, creative and inspiring family day out in Rhode Island, and you never know what you just might take away from it!
Don't forget to explore the gardens too!
