Did you know that WAY back in the early 19th century, two brothers built what would become one of the most outstanding landmarks in SW Virginia? Well, they did, and that landmark is The Mansion at Fort Chiswell!
The Mansion at Fort Chiswell was built around 1840 on a site that was settled in 1771 - so there is history all around!
Fort Chiswell itself became one of the most important stopovers to the West along the Great Wilderness Road, and now it's a fascinating experience for families who want to see how life was over 100 years ago in the area.
The mansion took over 10 years to restore, but now it's listed on the U.S National Register of Historic Places, AND as a Virginia State Historic Landmark (so it must be pretty special!)
The kids can wak through gracious bedrooms to see where families just like yours would have slept, and see some of the beautiful places in the mansion, such as the wood-burning kitchen fireplace.
Make sure you look at the attention to detail in the craftsmanship such as the elegant stairways and halls, and think about all the stories that the walls could tell if they could!
It's a great way for kids to use their imagination as they explore - who would have lived here? What would they have been like?
Across the year, The Mansion at Fort Chiswell hold several events open to the public, so keep an eye out so you don't miss out!
Kids - there is also ice cream available. What's not to love!?
