The Columbus Museum brings American history and art to life for the communities of the Chattahoochee Valley, and also happens to be one of the largest museums in the Southeast! It's prized permanent collection allows you to really step back through history as you explore the artifacts and exhibits, such as the Colonial Art and New Nation exhibit.
Kids, did you know that in the early 18th century, most American colonists lacked the wealth and the leisure time to cultivate the fine arts, and nowhere to receive formal training. The skilled artists were mainly immigrants who brought European art styles, and so a demand for portrait painting was born!
You can imagine what life was like in the 19th century through the Classical Furniture exhibit, when American furniture was a more simple version for France's Empire Style (popular during Napoleon's reign!)
Kids can look at the curves and carvings on these dark wood pieces - who do you think the people who once used them would have been?
You can learn about the brave pioneers and how they rapidly expanded the nation's frontier borders, and how artists started to associate the unspoiled wilderness with the promise to settlers, leading to artwork of the time depicting moments from everyday life (and you can see some of that artwork too!), and the different styles of art, such as American Impressionism.
A fascinating look through the history books through some pretty amazing pieces of art at the Columbus Museum, so kids, are you ready to explore?
