If only the walls could talk at the Surratt House Museum in Maryland! Built in 1852, you might think from looking at the exterior that Surratt House is just a grand example of a middle-class plantation home, but in fact there is a fascinating history behind it!
Surratt House served not only as a residential property, but also as a tavern, a post office and even a polling place during the crucial decade before the Civil War.
During the war, it also happened to be a safehouse for the Confederate underground (which flourished in Southern Maryland) - and here is where the story gets even more interesting, because Surratt House was also the country home of Mary Surratt.
Kids, do you know who she is? Well, she happens to be the first woman executed by the US government after she was found guilty of conspiring with a certain John Wilkes Booth to assassinate Abraham Lincoln!
We're pretty sure we have your attention now!
You can walk through history with a visit to this historic Maryland home, with a Visitor Center where you can read about more of the history before experiencing the home itself.;
Keep an eye out for the electric map highlighting the display route of John Wilkes Booth himself.
