Who loves history? The USA has some amazing places to visit when it comes to Civil War history. Did you know you can actually visit the site of certain battles?
Stones River National Battlefield is one of them!
The Battle of Stones River began on the last day of 1862 and was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the Civil War. The battle produced important military and political gains for the Union, and it changed forever the people who lived and fought here.
Your first stop should be the Visitor Center. It's here you can really gain an understanding of what you are about to experience. There's an interesting museum where kids can uncover the stories of the battle, as well as a movie all about what happened.
There is even a bookstore where you can pick up some fun items too!
Whilst on the battlefield, you can use that knowledge of history to imagine what the men and women went through all those years ago. You can also learn about the ecosystem and terrain in the area. Of course, terrain and natural features had an impact on the Battle of Stones River, and today the National Parks Service care for and maintain the terrain to ensure a healthy ecosystem.
Keep an eye out for the wildlife in the area too!
A fascinating day out in history for the family. And a beautiful part of Tennessee too!
