What better way to spend a day with the family, than having fun WHILST learning something! We love that!
The State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg is actually the official museum of the commonwealth. It also happens to be an amazing place for the entire family to visit. There are things to be discovered, exhibits to explore, and fun to be had! The museum is ALL about Pennsylvania too - didn't think there was enough great history of the state to fill an entire museum? Think again!
There are a number of fascinating exhibits which you can enjoy - some temporary and some permanent. Some of the great features in the permanent exhibits are amazing! The Brockerhoff House is a replica facade of a mansion circa 1833, and rooms furnished from periods dating all the way back to 1790. An amazing look back in time at life in this great state long before you were born! How would your life differ do you think if you had to live back then?
You can stroll the life-size streetscape that is just like the 19th century towns and villages, and there is even a kitchen and shop to explore.
Kids can become immersed in the early Native American cultures at the anthropology and archaeology gallery. There are some great collections and excavations there!
Learn all about the transportation and industry with tools, machines and vehicles from the thriving industrial past, and get lost in the Civil War and learn all about the Battle of Gettysburg.
Of course, no museum would be complete without dinosaurs! With exhibits on geology, prehistoric mammals and of course, those great creatures that once roamed the earth, kids can really get a sense of what the world used to be like right under their feet.
Learning CAN be fun at the State Museum of Pennsylvania!
