Kids - have you ever been in a real life working lighthouse?! Now is your chance, just take your family day out to St. Simon's Island Lighthouse on the coast of Georgia!
The first lighthouse was built all the way back in 1810 - that's a pretty long time ago! Now, you can experience this traditional and historic working lighthouse for yourself. During your family day out, you can explore the maritime, lifeguarding and local seafaring history at the lighthouse itself, as well as other attractions from the Keeper's Dwelling Museum to the Maritime Museum.
It is a whopping 104 feet tall and it's amazing beam can be cast out 23 miles out to sea - how impressive! It also happens to STILL be aiding ships that are coming past the Georgia coast.
The tour is a great way to immerse yourself in the history of the lighthouse. Are you ready to climb up 129 circular steps up to the top of the amazing St. Simons Island Lighthouse? Let's go! There are only five lighthouses in Georgia, so you don't have many chances to do this!
As well as those amazing views from the top, you can explore the original 1872 Keeper's Dwelling, which once served as the home to the lighthouse keepers, but is now a two-story museum. It's here you will be able to look around all the exhibits and artifacts which will tell you ALL about the story of the lighthouse!
You tour ALSO gives you a look at the Maritime Center which holds the historic Coast Guard Station, which is just minutes away.
So ships ahoy, it’s time to get on those lighthouse keepers caps and let’s get lost in history!
