Slide Rock State Park was originally the Pendley Homestead, yet today is a stunning 43-acre historic apple farm located in Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona - offering history, nature and a great day out for the family!
The history of Slide Rock State Park as we know it today starts with a man named Frank L. Pendley who arrived in the canyon in 1907, and formally acquired the land in 1910. He was an amazing innovator, and it was these skills that led him to succeeded where others failed - he established a unique irrigation system which is still in use by the park today!
This meant that the first apple orchard was able to be planted in 1912, which marked the start of agricultural development that has dominated the site since that time.
What's fascinating about a visit to Slide Rock State Park, is that even today you can see one of the few historic homesteads left intact, as you appreciate that Slide Rock State Park is a fine example of early agricultural development in Central Arizona.
The site was also instrumental to the development the tourism industry in Oak Creek Canyon. The canyon road was compelted in 1914 and after the paving of the roadway in 1938, the area was heavily promoted for recreational use.
Today, when you visit Slide Rock State Park, you can still enjoy the fruits of Pendley's labor! There are those historic cabins you can see with your very own eyes, and the creek offers the park's namesake slide for adventures seekers and those looking for a place to cool off! (THIS is super fun for kids!)
A beautiful day out in a beautiful part of Sedona!
