The Civil War was one of the most defining events in American history, and what better way to learn about it than for the family to actually visit some of the locations that the battles took place. History really will be right under your feet!
Shiloh National Military Park in Tennessee lets you visit the sites of what is described as the "most epic struggle in the Western Theater of the Civil War."
It really was an amazing event, with nearly 110,000 American troops engaging in a bloody battle which resulted in over 23,000 deaths. This was more than all of America's past wars...combined.
The Shiloh and the Corinth battlefields are there ready to let kids understand the impact that this battle had on the war, the soldiers, as well as the nation.
When you arrive at the Shiloh National Military Park, the Shiloh Battlefield and Corinth Civil War Interpretive Centers are great places to start. Both are filled with exhibits to show you all the tools that were used in the war, as well as the effects of their use.
There are also great films for you to watch which is a great introduction so as you walk around the park, you will be able to really imagine what went on right on the ground you are standing. It's pretty amazing!
The best way to then explore the battlefields are self-guided tours. Shiloh Battlefield's audio tour takes you on a 12.7 mile auto tour and covers 20 stops of some pretty famous and significant places, such as the Peach Orchard, death site of Albert Sidney Johnston, and the Hornet's Nest.
The Civili War Corinth audio tours are perfect to use on your own self-guided walking tour, which takes you to some amazing historic features, from Civil War fortifications, to homes used by the generals, and of course portions of the Corinth Battlefield.
History can live once more through great sites like the Shiloh National Military Park!
