The Sheffield Island Lighthouse is a part of Connecticut history, so what better way to spend a day in this amazing state that to learn all about it!
Sheffield Island Lighthouse Tours are a great way to experience the historic 1868 lighthouse - which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Pretty amazing! It was actually in service for an amazing 34 years, before it retired way back in 1902. It had a pretty incredible life!
Today, the lighthouse and the grounds are a nature preserve, as well as a museum, and luckily for you - a great place to visit for a family day out!
At the Sheffield Island dock, all families can just board the Seaport ferry for the day ahead. Once on the island, you can get your tour underway! The lighthouse itself is fascinating, with it's 10 rooms showcasing some pretty awesome period furniture, which gives a chance for kids to experience what it would have been like to be a light keeper in the 19th century. Kids - do you think it's something you would wanted to have done?
If you are at the top of the lighthouse, on a clear day you can see all the way over to the New York skyline!
Also on the island is a beautiful nature trail through the Stewart B. McKinney Wildlife Refuge, where there is a viewing platform to give you the best chance of looking at the nesting herons and other birds.
History, nature, and Connecticut - a pretty amazing family day out. Don’t forget those cameras!
