Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is a wonderful place to exprience the history of the Erie Canal. We have a wonderful small museum space inside the Visitor Center.
The Site also has miles of towpath trails, is adjacent to the Empire State Trail / Canalway Bikepath, and we feature picnic areas, a boat launch, and small playground. We are a perfect stop in on family vacations or a destination all its own.
Experience our Erie Canal history along miles of trail that include historic locks, canal prism, and run adjacent to the Mohawk River. Birding is a popular activity at the site, but we also have wonderful wildflowers to check out during the spring and summer. Our foliage in the autumn is stunning and the trails are open in the winter to explore snow-covered landscapes.
Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at our picnic areas at Yankee Hill Lock or the Aqueduct Boat Launch. Relax along the creek or river, or perhaps bring kayaks/canoes to paddle those waterways. We are adjacent to the bike trail, with ample parking and easy access to peddle your way across the county or even all of NY! Come explore history, experience our site, and create memories that will last a lifetime!
