Get ready to set sail on a journey across the two floors of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, where you can learn about the rich maritime history of the Santa Barbara region - and there is some fascinating history to explore!
You can trace the history back through to the Early Explorers, and their struggles of navigating such unknown waters. Kids can learn about the Chumash, and the early inhabitants of the region, and what maritime exploration meant for them.
There's an exhibit on whaling, and how that activity formed an important part of the culture, and you can even learn about the history of the waterfront and its development.
We know that commercial fishing and diving uses some pretty high tech equipment, but what was fishing and diving like before such technology was around?
Explore the history of oil in the Santa Barbara channel, as well as the history of navigation, and even learn of the shipwrecks that still lay under the waters!
The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum also celebrates the women keepers of the Santa Barbara lighthouse.
Great for kids are the interactive exhibits, where they can raise a sail, explore sustainable fishing, sort trash for recycling, and take on a virtual dive!
It's made even more special when you realize you are learning about history that happened right outside the museum's doors!
All aboard - the ship is sailing for that family day out!
