We use cotton everyday, but do you actually know the history of it? After all, it has to come from somewhere!
Thanks to the Plantation Agriculture Museum in Arkansas, you learn all about it! The history starts before you walk in the door, as the building itself was built in 1912. Once inside, there are exhibits and programs that showcase the history of the cotton industry within Arkansas from 1836.
Kids, do you know what the history would start from 1836? Why, that's when Arkansas officially became a state of course! Then, you can trace the progression of cotton right through to WWII, when all of the agricultural practices became mechanized.
You can learn about growing of the cotton, and the picking, and even ginning, storing and seeds! Make sure you check out the Dortch Gin Building as well as Seed Warehouse No. 5.
The Dortch Gin Building actually produced gin by steam back in 1919, and the Seed Warehouse building was restored to it's 1948 appearance and is filled with exhibits on it's original use, so there is always history to learn when you visit the Plantation Agriculture Museum!
So take a walk back through history, and learn about this fascinating aspect of Arkansas history in person, where it actually happened!
