Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in another time? Say perhaps, 1821? Well, if you're in Salem, you might want to visit the historic Phillips House. In fact, Phillips House is the ONLY home on the historic Chestnut Street which is open to the public - who's ready to go back in time!
Ever heard of the Phillips House before? No? Well, here's a little history. WAY back in 1821, there were four rooms from ANOTHER house transported by ox sled onto Chestnut Street (what a way to move a house!) This area was particularly fashionable, and these rooms would go on to forming part of a new home.
Over 100 years later, this house was renovated in Colonial Revival style. This then became the Phillips House!
Now, it's open to families just like yours so you can experience what it would have been like to live in the early decades of the 20th century, and to catch a glimpse of the private world of the Phillips family and their domestic staff.
It's great for kids to see how other families would have lived, and see how new technologies were introduced. You can explore the pantry, kitchen and domestic staff bedroom.
There is even an extensive collection from the family's travels on display, including early American furniture and Persian carpets!
Dads...you might even like checking out the Model A Ford they have there!
Phillips House have guided tours, or you can visit the Carriage House and enjoy a self-guided tour.
Either way, you will re-live history and experience a whole new way of life! How different do you think it would be to yours? Only one way to find out!
