Pettigrew State Park is not only a beautiful part of North Carolina, but it also boasts the very cool 16,000 acre Lake Phelps too! During your time here, you can explore not only the lake but also the surrounding landscape by land OR water. How cool is that?
So, what kind of adventure takes your fancy? Is it fishing that you enjoy? Great for you that the fishing at Pettigrew is legendary, with bass fishing being the most popular.
The lake teems with largemouth bass, as well as yellow perch and pumkinseed. You can even enjoy the challenges of pickeral and catfish as the Algonquians did 10,000 years ago! (And get some history in for the kids, too!)
If you want to get out onto the water, head out on your own kayak, canoe or shallow-drift boats. The nearby access also allows you onto the placid, blackwater Scuppernong River too.
Grab those walking shoes because there are plenty of trails at Pettigrew State Park too. These trails wind past some of the oldest, most majestic trees in the entire coastal region. For those bikers, you are allowed on those trails too!
If you want to extend your family day out into more of an adventure, check out the 13 site family campground. These are close to park amenities, and there are picnic grounds too, under the shade of the cypress grove.
To continue that historic journey (and Pettigrew State Park is rich in history!), check out the display of ancient American Indian dugout canoes, and visit the grave of a Confederate general.
An adventures and historic family day out in North Carolina, where the great outdoors really is, well great!
