Mississippi is FILLED with history, and so what better way to celebrate than to experience the most historic building in the state, and they offer FREE admission!
The Old Capitol Museum was once just the Old Capitol, and was the site where some of the state's most significant legislative actions took place, including the secession from the Union in 1861, and the 1839 Married Woman's Property Act.
You will be standing on the very spot where decisions were made that shaped Mississippi to how you know it!
The Old Capitol was restored to how beautiful and grand it used to be, and now has been turned into a museum that you can enjoy and learn from.
The museum focuses on the history of the building, and the events that took place within it. Learning is fun through the interactive multimedia exhibits where kids can explore the roles of the governor, legislature, and the high court.
The Old Capitol Museum is a National Historic Landmark, so you can see it's very important!
The exterior of the building itself it just as impressive! It is actually one of the country's best examples of Greek Revival public architecture. It was built all the way back in 1839, and it's HUGE limestone facade and copper dome, along with it's grand spaces on it's interior, actually made it one of the most distinguished buildings in the entire state.
So much of Mississippi was shaped in what is now the Old Capitol Building, so it really will give kids a fascinating history lesson during your Family Day Out!
Impressive!
