Ready for your history lesson to begin before you even reach the Old Capitol Museum in Iowa City?
Well, did you know that this current National Historic Landmark, located in the heart of Iowa City, actually served as the first state capitol back tin 1846 to 1857?
It was also the University of Iowa's founding building - which is pretty amazing!
Then, in 1976, the Old Capitol became a museum, and was actually restored to an 1840s - 50s time period, really embracing and celebrating the rich history, and today is dedicated to enlivening Iowa history for all!
So much history learnt already, and we haven't even stepped into the museum yet - so just imagine what you will uncover when you visit!
Exploring the galleries and exhibits of the Old Capitol Museum will really take you back on a historic journey through time. These changing experiences give you a deeper insight into the people and events that shaped Iowa City history.
You might learn about particular organizations and buildings, such as the Law School, that educated the state's first ever generation of lawyers.
It might be that you learn about the early history of food and food production, and how Iowans grew, prepared and enjoyed meals during the state's early years.
