The National Stars and Stripes Museum in Missouri is dedicated to the preservation and history of the Stars and Stripes newspaper, AND the US Armed Forces! The museum collects, documents and preserves a number of materials that are related to the creation and continued history of the Stars and Stripes military newspaper, to enhance visitors understanding and appreciation of the paper's role in American (and world) history!
Did you even know that there was a military newspaper? Well, not you do!
The exhibits take you back as far as the 1861 Civil War issue, right through to present day. The "Stars and Stripes" newspaper headlines cover much of the US history, and it's fascinating to take a journey through history, via the eyes of this historically important paper.
Did you know that on the 7th and 8th of November 1861, around 3,000 Union troops arrived in Bloomfield, and ten of those soldiers utilized the printing press of the Bloomfield Herald, and created the first newspaper FOR soldiers, BY soldiers!
You can see the actual original issue on display in the National Stars and Stripes Museum, and it's a pretty impressive sight!
A visit to the museum is also an insight into the various conflicts through the ages, with exhibits on WWI, as well as WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War and Gulf War, Kosovo and the Iraq war.
All of the exhibits feature a range of historic artifacts, such as a piece of the original Berlin Wall, photographs and more.
An eye-opening and history day out in Missouri, where you gain a unique point of view of infamous battles from those who actually fought on the front lines.
