We all know about helicopters (even if many of us haven't been in one!) but we know they are a key addition to the aviation industry, but do you really know the history of the helicopter? If not, that's exactly what the National Helicopter Museum is for!
This Connecticut museum contains hundreds of photographs and models that trace the history of the helicopter, both in the United States and around the world.
It was actually an airport and seaplane base built in Stratford in the 1920's that brought a man named Igor Sikorsky to the area to build his flying boats. In 1939 Sikorsky flew his US300 Helicopter in Stratford, leading to him producing many helicopters and rotary wing aircraft from that time.
So you could say that Stratford is the birthplace of the American helicopter industry, and what a fitting place for a museum!
Center state of the National Helicopter Museum is a full size cockpit that you can see up close, and it's pretty impressive!
There is also a fun computer Flight Simulator so you can actually feel what it's like to be in the pilot seat.
Another exhibit showcases the Bendix helicopter, also born out of Stratford, and other accomplishments within the helicopter aviation history!
When the museum is open, there are friendly volunteer docents on hand to ask questions to, and even offer you a tour of some of the displays.
So let's FLY into our next family day out in Stratford, because we're off to the National Helicopter Museum!
