There are a number of events in American History that really shaped who the country is today, and the Civil Rights movement is one of them.
So, if you're in Memphis, an eye opening experience for the kids would have to be the National Civil Rights Museum. The museum is actually located at the Lorraine Motel - the very place where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated. Already the kids can experiencing an infamous part of American history!
The National Civil Rights Museum chronicles key episodes during the American civil rights movement, as well as the legacy of the movement so they can inspire all who visit, and all human rights efforts globally.
The museum is more suited to the older children, who will really take something away from the collections and exhibitions.
The exhibits at the National Civil Rights Museum cover a range of themes and topics. Kids can actually enter a jail cell and hear some audio of Dr. King reading his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", with accompanying multimedia. You can chronicle the last hours of Dr. King, and understand why he was assassinated.
There are interactive exhibits that explain what African Americans were risking if they voted, and you can watch a short documentary on the 1964 Mississippi Summer Project.
For an incredible education on an important part of the American culture and past, a visit to the National Civil Rights Museum will give kids things to think about, learn from, and talk about.
