Are you ready for some nautical fun at the nation's leading maritime museum - Mystic Seaport Museum!
Mystic Seaport Museum was founded in 1929, and is spread over 19 acres on the Mystic River and makes for an incredibly exciting and popular family day out in Connecticut!
It's SO much more than just a museum. Yes, there are fascinating exhibits that tell the story of the waters, the people, the ships and adventures, but kids can also explore the recreated New England coastal village, as well as venture through the working shipyard, AND check out state-of-the-art artifacts!
In fact, the Mystic Seaport Museum has over 2 million artiacts in the collection - both physical and electronic! Paintings, models, tools, ship plans, historic archive, film, and over 1 million photos! Now THAT is a collection!
Did you know that at the Mystic Seaport Museum you can also see over 500 historic watercraft in person!? Yep! This includes FOUR National Historic Landmark vessels - the most notable is the 1841 whaleship Charles W Morgan - which happens to be the oldest comercial ship still in existence.
As you stroll through the historic village, you can experience firsthand from historians, musicians, storytellers and craftspeople, exactly what life would have been like for those earning a living from the sea! Kids - would that be something you feel you could do? (Pretty different without iphones, we bet!)
Think that's enough to enjoy? What if we told you that the museum also has a planetarium too!? How amazing is that? With gardens as well, Mystic Seaport Museum really is a must-do to any trip to Mystic, Connecticut!
