It's amazing when you read about history, then visit where it once happened so you can feel the stories in the air. The Monocacy National Battlefield is a place where families can experience the tales of a battle that is known as "The Civil War Battle that Saved Washington DC".
Not too sure about what happened? Well, here's a small story! Way back in 1864 (long before any of us were born!), General Early led the Confederate forces towards DC, and even threatened to capture the entire city.
Union troops met this army on the banks of the Monocacy, and history was made. Now, families and kids can head to the Monocacy National Battlefield to experience a landscape that looks and feels how it would have on that day back in the 19th century.
There is actually over 1,600 acres of historic buildings, rolling farm fields and incredible views all along the Monocacy River. When you arrive, the Visitor Center and Museum is a great place to start. Here, there are park rangers and volunteers who will answer your questions and help you with your orientation around the park.
The 2nd floor holds fascinating museum exhibits with interactive displays, historical artifacts and of course, lots of items related to the battle.
Get those walking shoes on, because you can pick up a walking tour map where you can do self-guided tours both on foot, as well as in your car. The auto tour give you 5 stops through 6 miles of history.
Don't forget to check about any programs that are offered in the park across the year - often with the help of Living History volunteers!
History is ready come to life at the Monocacy National Battlefield!
