The Mississippi Museum of Art started with a small collection of art back in 1911, and today has grown to over 5,500 objects, so if you want a creative and inspiring family day out in the South, the Mississippi Museum of Art is waiting!
The permanent collection spanning a number of artists, culture and history, but the main focus is American art from the 19th to 20th centuries. Here, kids can explore works from some of the nation's most prominent artists, including Radcliffe Bailey and Robert Henri.
A highlight of the permanent collection is The Mississippi Story, which is a thematic exhibition encompassing Mississippi artists, from the first native-born professional artist, through to icons of today.
There's also the Icons Gallery that offers a forum for changing exhibition from the museum's permanent collection, including Pre-Columbian ceramics, Renaissance art and more!
Let's not forget that the Mississippi Museum of Art also hosts a number of changing exhibits across the year, so you can plan your next day out around these!
The exhibits always focus on their own unique theme or subject matter. It might be contemporary art from a specific town, or a deeper look at an aspect of local life, for example Antebellum Mississippi.
