We ALL know who President Abraham Lincoln is, but do you know much about his family? Well, he was married to a lady named Mary Todd,. She was of course the first lady of this 19th century President, but she also grew up in Lexington. Pretty amazing!
Now, the Mary Todd Lincoln House has been preserved, and makes a great historical family day out in Kentucky for all those budding history buffs!
This beautiful two-story Georgian house was built between 1803 - 1806, originally as an inn by a man called William Palmateer. Mary Todd, was born in Lexington in 1818, and was the 4th of sixteen children (SIXTEEN!) and was the daughter of the town's wealthier men, Robert Smith Todd.
The house that you get to experience was the family home for Mary Todd until she moved to Springfield, Illinois in 1939 and well, the rest is history!
What you will get to experience at the Mary Todd Lincoln House today is the original 14 room house, complete with period furniture, furnishings and family portraits from not only the Todds, but the Lincoln's also.
The original property also contained a number of additions, such as an outdoor kitchen, wash house, slave quarters, stables and smoke house, but unfortunately there is no evidence of these today.
However, at the Mary Todd Lincoln House, you get to enjoy the recently added gardens that reflect the charm of the original, so you can really make a relaxing day of your historical experience!
Take a step back into 19th century history with this fascinating Lexington home! Did you think Mary would have any idea of her future when she grew up in this home? How amazing!
