Some good exhibits but most attractions are very worn and I’d say a good 50% of the museum is out of order. We arrived just over an hour before the place closed and there were several employees standing around the bottom of the stairs, clearly waiting for closing time so they could go home. We managed to play with all of the working exhibits and be finished just over an hour later when the museum closed. As we were leaving I approached the lady at the front desk about the bad state of repair of the exhibits and she replied rather cooly that she knew that was the case and that they were trying to raise funds to repair them. Has potential but it’s poor value at $ 7.50 per person with so many attractions out of order.

My family has been to other children’s museums, one in Portland, and one in NH, and neither comes close to the Bangor museum in terms of quality of the exhibits, friendliness of staff, cleanliness of the facility itself, and efforts on the part of the museum to give kids and their families an educational and FUN experience. When my daughter was a toddler, she would spend HOURS in the kitchen play area, or picking carrots from the garden area upstairs. There are also interactive displays that would appeal to older kids, and speaking for myself and my husband, the grown up “kids” have a great time too. There’s also a regular schedule of rotating activities, so check out their calendar of events. Can’t say enough about this gem, right here in our own backyard! Thanks to the MDM for many happy afternoons!

We just had our son’s birthday party here and were sadly dissatisfied with the staff. Upon arrival we learned that they had lost our paperwork and had no idea who any of our guests were. While my son was using the markers on the swaying table to make “art” one of our other guests waited patiently for his turn. The two girls working this with the kids were being catty about other employees and talking about boys and how much they were looking forward to their break. When my kid was done, they closed everything up and didn’t let his friend have a turn. This project takes all of a minute and a half!!!! I said something to them to which they replied, “you can check at the front desk to see when we’ll be back.” There was only one kid waiting!!!!! As we were saying goodbye to our guests in the lobby, another employee comes up and hands us a blank cd and says, “Sorry, this was to record a song on in our music room, (part of the package price) we forgot to give it to you, you can still do it, but you need an employee to help.” All of his friends had already left! We also were charged for 13 guests when we only had 12. NEVER again will we bring our parties to this place! It’s a shame really, the place has potential…too bad the staff doesn’t care. (The only reason they got one star is because Google made me.)

My daughter (now 5) and I are big fans of the Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor. We’ve been going since she was two, however we really miss this museum a lot because we moved out of state. We have visited many children’s museums throughout Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusettes but nothing compares to the MDM in Bangor. I love the crafts and science projects which are are planned daily, it is one of their best features! Those unique activities are what kept us coming back. Not every museum offers such wonderful activities for children.
