Your time at the Lyndon B Johnson National Historical Park offers a full "circle of life" perspective into one of the USA's most noteworthy citizens, with the most complete picture of any American president.
Start with his ancestors, and go back to the 1800s as you explore the very log cabin that once belonged to his grandparents. This log cabin is an easy stroll along the self-guiding trail from the Visitor Center, and the round trip is less than a mile long.
Then, visit the one room school house that Johnson was once himself a student at, and you can visit Johnson's boyhood home, where he lived from the age of five years, until his high school graduation in 1924. With the furnishings dating from the early to mid 1920's, it's a great way for kids to see what life in rural Texas would have been like all those years ago.
Open Thursday to Monday, Park Rangers offer free guided tours starting on the hour, so check ahead for details so you don't miss out!
One of the highlights with any visit, is the LBJ Ranch, where Johnson was born, lived, died and buried. Today, you can tour the ranch in your own private vehicle, with the ability to stop at the various sites along the way
Make note that there are two distinct areas of the park to visit, separated by 14 miles. One region is the LBJ Ranch, family cemetery and Historic Site Visitor Center, and the other area features the boyhood home and another center.
A fascinating and worthwhile insight into the 36th President of the USA, as well as life in 19th and early 20th century Texas.
