Abraham Lincoln is widely known as the 16th president of the USA, but who was the man before this responsibility? Lincoln Home National Historic Site uncovers the man as he was as a spouse, a parent, and a neighbour.
It's a great way to show kids that really, you can be anyone you want to be!
He was just a normal man with hopes and dreams - just like kids today. He faced challenges that are still experienced to this day.
The only access to the Lincoln Home is through a tour. Tickets are free, but you must reserve a specific tour time. (You can get these at the Visitor Center Information Desk on a first-come first-served basis!)
The home opened to the public in 1887 and still continues to amaze people! The home itself was built in 1839 and is restored to it's 1860 appearance, so you can image him sitting at his desk, or wandering around the halls.
Do you think you could have lived in this house?
Your tour will be ranger-led, and gives you an insight into the 17 years that he spent there with his family - all the way to his rise to president!
See the formal parlor, and stroll through the sitting room. Perhaps imagine yourself having tea in the dining room?
You can even step into his bedroom! The kitchen, backyard and the outbuildings are all part of the tour too.
At the Lincoln Home National Historic Site there is a free film available that highlights his life in the home, which you can enjoy before heading outside to the Lincoln Neighbourhood exhibit which focus on the Lincoln-era homes that he would have known! You can follow in the footsteps and stroll along this 4 block flashback into history. Kids will love seeing the actual houses right in-front of their eyes!
A fascinating insight into a fascinating man. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site is a must for anyone who loves history.
